Markets fail to surprise

Yesterday, our endeavours felt somewhat uninspiring, though our efforts were not for a lack of trying. The trades we sought to facilitate failed to materialize as anticipated. In the butter market, the seller contingent is rapidly diminishing, yet buyers remain hesitant to adjust their bids up. Over in the realm of powdered products, our partners opted for a cautious approach, choosing to await the outcome of the ONIL result. Finaly, in the cheese sector, while some sellers entered the fray, their presence failed to atract significant buying activity.

Turning our look to the liquid market, a more nuanced picture emerges. Cream prices held steady, defying the expectations of bearish traders, yet they failed to soar to the heights predicted by the bulls. Hovering between €6400 and €6500, the market exudes an aura of stability. SMC prices, on the other hand, exhibited a wide range, spanning from €1350 to €1500, with unsubstantiated rumours hinting at even higher valuations. However, the biggest problem the liquids part of the market faces is that of raw milk. We see prices fluctuating between 35 and 38 cents. It seems everyone we speak to can spin the market within its market outlook, with pessimists forecasting further downward pressure during peak season, while optimists interpret the prevailing stability as indicative of resilience against burgeoning milk volumes, especially with warmer weather forecasts on the horizon.

Meanwhile, for those eagerly awaiting the results of the O.N.I.L tender, early indications seem to reinforce existing market sentiments. While exact figures remain pending confirmation, initial reports suggest that WMP volumes originate from sources beyond the EU, while the bulk of SMP emanates from EU producers and traders. Though SMP pricing exhibits some variance, preliminary estimates range between €2300 and €2420 FOB for deliveries scheduled between June and September. The lower end of this range was more in our expected outcome, the € 2420 seems on the high side.

Amidst this confluence of information, the market's trajectory remains somewhat vague. Our analysis centres on the balance of buyers and sellers across product categories. In the butter market, a slight bullish sentiment reigns, with buyers outnumbering sellers, hinting at an upward trend. Conversely, in the cheese sector, a subtle shift is observed, with a slight increase in sellers prompting a corresponding pullback in buyer activity. As for the SMP market, opportunities abound, yet the disparity between bid and offer prices persists, hindering market convergence.

As we embark upon a new day, tangible offers and bids remain scarce. Many of our partners have signalled a preference for a "wait and see" approach, choosing to exercise caution until clearer signals emerge to inform their strategic decisions.
